SOME HIGHLIGHTS OF OUR SERVICES ON CAMPUS...

Fisher College -- Laying the Foundation

"Fisher is a poster child. It is using our turnkey services and making real progress in sustainability," said EcoMotion President Ted Flanigan. In its first year the program set up communications for students and faculty including a website, built a solid EcoReps program, re-invigorated the campus' recycling program and added reusable water bottles to daily life. Students and faculty provided input for an EcoRep handbook and engagement form and finalized Fisher's Strategic Sustainability Plan.

Wheaton College -- Student Engagement and Action

At Wheaton College, studens were fundamental to the foundation of the Murphy Apple Orchard initiative. Now in its third year, the Orchard has become a vibrant living-learning laboratory. In its first year, the orchard became the site for several outdoor classes. The Sustainability Education for Environmental Development (S.E.E.D.S.) group held several classes with pre-school aged children in the orchard. In addition to servicng as an outdoor classroom, the orchard provides work and learning opportunities for students who enjoy digging in the soil and providing care for the trees throughout the seasons.

Los Angeles Unified School District -- Policy and Planning

With over 2,000 campuses, LAUSD is the largest school district in California. Bonding authority in hand, EcoMotion joined an "all-star" solar team to prepare a pragmatic solar strategy that included a screening system for site selection. This involved roof age, material and condition; interconnection requirements; shade and wind analysis; and balancing technical opportunities with impacting young students and their families with positive renewable energy messages. EcoMotion reviewed dozens of sites for the District.

Santa Monica College -- The Solar Sweet Spot

EcoMotion has a six-year history working with Santa Monica College in Santa Monica, California. Our solar team analyzed the entire campus for its solar potential, and was instrumental in developing the college's solar strategy. Now over 400 kW is installed on campus, and the College has recently made made plans to expand its solar capacity with another 515 kW to be spread across four different buildings. EcoMotion continues to support the college in a number of ways -- keeping planners up to date on incentives and regulatory changes, and connecting certified contractors with College officials. Concurrently, EcoMotion advised the Santa Monica Malibu Unified School District on an 8-school solar installation enabled by a complex power purchase agreement that provided 100% financing to the district.

College of the Desert -- Mobilizing the Community

When EcoMotion was selected to develop Greenhouse Gas Inventories, Energy Action Plans and Climate Action Plans for six desert cities and a tribe in the Coachella Valley in Southern California, an essential component of the initiative was the creation and deployment of the Climate Action Crew.

Made up of 18 interns, many drawn from the local College of the Desert, the Crew is playing a key role in outreach to their own and neighboring communities. In additon to supporting EcoMotion data collection, Crew members -- like Sal, shown here -- developed their own Energy Action Pledge to capture the interest and commitment of the individuals they meet.

Anaheim Project -- Let the Sun Shine

Anaheim Public Utilities partnered with EcoMotion and The Rahus Institute to create the Anaheim Solar Flags program, a project that will install ten one- kilowatt solar photovoltaic systems –at no cost to the school – into ten school campuses in the city. Eight of the Flags have already been completed. This demonstration project exemplifies the creative projects that can be successfully completed by municipal utilities, using their community’s Public Benefits Funds.

Each school had a Kick-off Celebration unique to the campus and student culture. From musical interpretations to writing contests, the Kick-offs had its students at the core of the each theme. The Solar Flag website was also developed, with the ability to track solar production from each Flag and highlight activities on the solar campuses. Along with student education came Teacher Workshops, where solar specialist Tor Allen was brought in from The Rahus Institute to train educators on both classic and innovative strategies to explore solar power in the classroom.

EcoMotion invites municipal utilities and their school districts to investigate whether a Solar Flag program would meet their community's goals.
